Civil Unions in Illinois

Civil Unions become legal in Illinois today, making Illinois another state in which gay and lesbian partners can receive protected benefits for their relationships. While civil unions are not equivalent to marriage, they will provide certain benefits and legal recognition. Some of these benefits include automatic rights for hospital visitation, the freedom to make emergency health decisions for partners, adoption and parental rights for children, pension benefits, and inheritance rights.

Heterosexual couples may also receive licenses for a civil unions.

As our nation and as our churches are divided over these types of partnerships, we pray for people who find themselves on both sides of the debate.

Here are some news stories concerning this new status in Illinois. They discuss what these civil unions will do for couples in the state of Illinois, and they also voice opinions from people who are for the provision and those who are against this new bill.
