Prayers for Libya

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Libya this week as they live in the midst of political upheaval and violence. An army unit attacked people in a mosque today with automatic weapons inside the city of Zawiya. The people inside the mosque were gathered to protest the leadership of Colonel Moammar Gadhafi and his regime, calling for his resignation. They had been camping at the mosque for days. At least 10 have died and approximately 150 people have been injured.

After the attack, thousands marched to Martyr's Square inside the city, chanting, "Leave! Leave!"

Later in the day, Moammar Gadhafi responded in a speech on Al-Jazeera, attributing the political revolt to the influence of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaida.

"Fight for Libya Edges Closer to Tripoli and Gadhafi" by NPR Staff and Wires contains recent updates on the today's violence in Libya.
